Master Key Consulting Builds Community Business & School Spirit

May 18, 2012

Keshena, WI: The students at the Menominee Indian High School, in Keshena, Wisconsin have something to cheer about, thanks to Bethesda, Maryland-based Master Key Consulting.

For many high schools across the US, the idea of a school store is a common notion.  But for the 198 students at the Menominee Indian High School on the Menominee Indian Reservation in north central Wisconsin, a school store that sells t-shirts, baseball caps, hoodies and other apparel items with their high school logo has been a perennial goal that could never seem to get off the ground.  That is until Corey Webster, a dedicated teacher at Menominee Indian High School, decided to make a phone call that would transform this dream into reality.

Webster, a deeply involved Art Teacher, Assistant Varsity Football Coach, Senior Class Advisor, Yearbook Advisor and M.E.D.I.A. Advisor, decided to add another hat to his collection when he took on the role of developing a school store for the Indian reservation high school.  Since Webster arrived at the school four years ago, he has supported the idea of a school store to build school spirit.  “School spirit in the form of spirit wear is not readily available here,” said Webster.  “You don’t see many students walking around with items supporting our school.  A few years ago we offered some school t-shirts and sweatshirts and they sold out in a few weeks.  The students, parents, and community members were so excited.  I knew then that a school store with clothing, hats, spirit items, back packs, school supplies and various logo items would be a huge success for our school and community.”

With this revelation, Webster approached the school Principal and Superintendent and received their enthusiastic support.  “The only thing standing in our way was the money to make it happen,” said Webster.  “That’s when I decided to call Jonathan Wilber at Master Key Consulting to see if he could help.”

Wilber, Menominee Tribal member, former student of the Menominee Indian School District and CEO of Master Key Consulting has been a long standing supporter of Menominee Nation institutions and charities.  When Webster approached Wilber with a request for a $2,000-$3,000 cash donation to get the project off the ground, Wilber responded with a $10,000 donation from Master Key Consulting, giving the Menominee Eagles the wings it needed to start their high school store.

Wilber, an active proponent of small Native American businesses, wanted to do more than just make a donation.  He wanted to connect the new school store with a small Native American apparel supplier to ensure that the company’s donation would benefit students, community and small business in equal parts.  Native Genes Apparel, owned by a Menominee Indian High School graduate, was selected to supply the new school store with quality apparel products showcasing unique American Indian designs.

When asked about his generous school donation and efforts to benefit small Native American businesses, Jonathan Wilber commented on Master Key Consulting’s core beliefs.  “Targeted giving is part of our Key Principles, developed by our employees in 2003 to positively impact our clients, our community and our company.   Schools and colleges serving American Indian students have given us so much and continue to develop leaders from our native communities,” said Wilber.  “Giving back to these schools and encouraging tribal entrepreneurship is a clear priority for our corporate giving.   Prosperity will only come to Menominee and other reservations when individual members own and run businesses that benefit their communities.  Government run businesses are not going to get it done.   If our gift inspires just one student to open their eyes and their minds wide enough to dream about someday owning their own business, creating local jobs and benefitting the entire community…then this is money well spent.”

Students at the Menominee Indian High School will have the opportunity to work in their new student store, increasing critical sales and business management skills.  “The new student store will be a great opportunity for our students to put business skills into practice and learn what it takes to make a business run,” said Webster.  “Parents and fans of the Menominee Eagles will also have the opportunity to buy spirit wear that supports the Eagles’ Basketball, Football, Volley Ball and other teams. “

The $10,000 donation from Master Key requires the school to reinvest store profits to continually maintain product inventory and add more items on a regular basis.  The store is waiting for its first delivery and will open soon to offer school spirit wear and other school logo merchandise.

“I can’t wait to finally have school spirit wear on the shelves and ultimately in the community,” said Webster.  “This donation from Master Key has made all the difference and will give our community something to cheer about.”

Portage County EMS Wins Customer Satisfaction Award

March 23, 2012

Under the leadership of Medical Director Michael Curtis, MD, Portage County Emergency Medical Services began using a formal customer satisfaction survey in 2011. Under the contracts Portage County has with Stevens Point Fire Department and Amherst Fire District, each service is required to meet a number of quality measures including clinical excellence, operational safety, response time reliability, system organization and customer satisfaction. Although some smaller satisfaction surveys had been conducted in the past, this was the first organized effort to use a validated survey program to measure customer satisfaction.

Each month a percentage of EMS patients are mailed a survey and asked to rate each component of the system including dispatch, first responders, ambulance care and transport and our billing service. In 2011 approximately 1000 surveys were mailed and nearly a quarter of them were returned to the survey company, the EMS Survey Team, for tabulation.

Each month and quarter, the EMS Survey Team sends Portage County EMS reports comparing our customers’ opinion of us to 54 other EMS agencies across the country. The reports allow us to track changes in our customers’ responses each month and identify trends in each area.

This spring, Portage County EMS was presented with an Industry Leadership Award by the EMS Survey Team for having an overall customer satisfaction rating of 93.4% which ranks 8th out of all services that use the survey. “This is a remarkable achievement for Portage County EMS” said Sandie Curtis, Emergency Management Director. “The satisfaction of our patients is a primary concern of our system. We use other measures to demonstrate that we provide high quality medical care but this rating demonstrates that our providers are also excellent at other aspects of care such as communicating with the patient, including them in their care choices, treating their pain, making them feel safe and protecting their privacy.”

January 16, 2012

The 2012 Girl Scout Cookie Program begins Friday, January 20. Girl Scouts will be selling Girl Scout cookies door-to-door January 20-February 5, and will host cookie booths outside of area businesses March 9-April 8.

Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes (GSNWGL) Council is now working with a new Girl Scout cookie baker and will now be offering some different and some new cookie varieties: Thin Mints, Shortbreads, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Caramel deLites, Shout Outs!, Thanks-A-Lots, and Lemonades. One box costs $3.50, or you can purchase a case (12 boxes) for $42.00. The Girl Scout Council is also taking orders for those interested in sending a case of Girl Scout cookies to soldiers overseas for the cost of $42.00.

Girl Scouts who participate in the Cookie Program develop skills that will last a lifetime, such as goal-setting, money management, decision-making, business ethics, and people skills. Plus, the profits girls make off their cookie sales can go to the Girl Scout camps, programs, trips, community service projects, or shop purchases of their choice.

If you don’t have a Girl Scout in your family or neighborhood but would like to purchase cookies, call the Girl Scout Council at 888.747.6945 and you will get connected with a local Girl Scout.

This cookie season, when a Girl Scout gets the courage to look you in the eye and ask you if you would like to purchase Girl Scout cookies, remember that every Girl Scout cookie has a mission: to help girls do great things!

Bull’s Eye CU, Rep. Krug Team Up with AT&T on Cell Phones for Soldiers Program

October 3, 2011

By Recycling Old Phones, Wireless Users Can Help Provide Free Phone Cards to Military Members Away from Home

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Bull’s Eye Credit Union and State Rep. Scott Krug (R-Wisconsin Rapids) announced today that they are teaming up with AT&T to honor past and present military members by recycling old cell phones. The cell phone recycling program supports Cell Phones for Soldiers, a charity that uses recycling proceeds to buy and send free phone cards to military members stationed away from home.

“This program is a very easy way for us to show our gratitude toward our service men and women who are serving away from their homes,” Rep. Krug said. “Keeping the lines of communication open between our service personnel and their loved ones is so important for morale and the emotional health of our troops.”

Area residents are encouraged to recycle their old wireless phones at either of the following Bull’s Eye Credit Unions from October 3-31:
• 1930 8th Street South, Wisconsin Rapids
• 3316 Business Park Drive, Stevens Point

“Bull’s Eye Credit Union was gracious enough to be the collection point for this charity drive,” Rep. Krug said. “My sincerest thanks go to the employees and especially President David Stark for being so accommodating.”

The Cell Phones for Soldiers program was founded in 2004 by teenagers Brittany and Robbie Bergquist as a way for military families serving overseas to keep in touch with family back home. Since July 2007, AT&T has been working with Cell Phones for Soldiers to collect phones for the cause. Every time a customer recycles a used wireless phone with AT&T, part of the proceeds support the Cell Phones for Soldiers program, which sends free prepaid phone cards to troops overseas.

This year, the group’s goal is to donate 12 million minutes to soldiers. With the help of wireless customers throughout the country, AT&T will match its 2008 recycling totals with the charity, year to year, through 2011, aiming to provide Cell Phones for Soldiers with $1 million in proceeds in that time.

“Our service members deserve our deepest gratitude for the sacrifices they make for our freedom,” said David Stark, President of Bull’s Eye Credit Union. “Helping our military families remain together across long distances is the least we can do to support them, and I encourage all area residents to participate in this drive to show their gratitude to these great American patriots.”

Items of interest range from the smallest Girl Scout pins, patches and jewelry to uniforms hats and clothing, badge and hand books, record albums and song books, scrapbooks and photo albums, and camping equipment. Resources or monetary donations to help with protecting and preserving our collections are also needed. Donations are tax deductible. Be part of celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouting!
